How Do Slot Machines Work? RNGs, Reels and RTP
1 min
Worth rememberingBehind the spinning reels, a random number generator decides every result in an instant. Here is how slots really work, and what RTP does and doesn’t tell you.
For adults 18+.
The reels, sounds and near-misses make slot machines feel like a game of timing or luck streaks. In reality, every result is decided by software the moment you press spin. Understanding how that works takes much of the mystery — and many of the myths — out of slots.
The random number generator
At the heart of every modern slot is a random number generator (RNG). It produces numbers continuously, and the one selected when you spin determines which symbols land. The animation that follows is just a display of a result that has already been decided.
Virtual reels
The reels you see don’t reflect how often each symbol can appear. The game’s maths can make some symbols — especially top-paying ones — far rarer than the visible reel suggests. That is also why near-misses happen so often: they are part of the design, not a sign that a win is close.
Paylines and ways to win
Wins are paid when matching symbols land in set patterns, called paylines, or in “ways” formats that count matches across adjacent reels. The paytable explains exactly what pays.
Return to player (RTP)
RTP is the share of all money staked that a game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. The rest is the house edge. RTP says nothing about what will happen in your session, which can vary enormously. Our explainer on RTP, volatility and progressives goes deeper.
Volatility
Volatility describes how wins are spread: frequent small wins or rare large ones. It changes how a session feels, not the long-run cost. See understanding slot volatility.
Myths worth dropping
- A machine is never “due” to pay out — each spin is independent.
- Stopping the reels early doesn’t change the result.
- The time of day or the size of previous wins makes no difference.
Treat any slot session as paid entertainment, with a budget set in advance.
