Casino Bonus Terms and Conditions: A Clause-by-Clause Reading

4 min

Worth rememberingBonus terms decide whether winnings from an offer can ever be withdrawn. Reading them in a set order takes minutes and avoids the most common disputes.

Audit, accounting and ledger

Every casino bonus arrives with conditions that decide when bonus money turns into cash you can withdraw — or whether it ever does. Reading those conditions in a fixed order takes about ten minutes and answers one practical question: what exactly has to happen before any winnings from this offer are mine to take out? If the answer is unclear, the offer is not worth accepting.

Three layers of rules

Most sites have three sets of terms that apply to a promotion at the same time:

  • General terms and conditions — the rules for the whole account.
  • A general bonus policy — standard rules for all promotions.
  • Offer-specific terms — the details for this particular deal, often shown under a "full terms" link.

Where they conflict, the documents usually state which one wins. Look for that sentence before anything else, because it tells you where to find the rule that actually applies.

A reading order that works

  1. Eligibility. Who qualifies: new customers only, a minimum deposit, certain countries, or excluded payment methods such as some e-wallets.
  2. How to claim. Whether you must opt in, enter a code or contact support — missing this step can mean the bonus never applies.
  3. Playthrough. How many times a sum must be bet before withdrawal, and whether that sum is the bonus alone or the bonus plus your deposit. A 30× requirement on a 20-unit bonus means 600 units in bets; the same multiple applied to bonus and deposit together means far more.
  4. Game contribution. Which games count towards playthrough and at what rate. Slots often count in full, while table and live games may count for a fraction or not at all.
  5. Maximum bet. A cap on the stake per spin or hand while the bonus is active. Going over it, even once, is a common reason winnings are removed.
  6. Time limits. How long you have to claim, to use free spins and to complete playthrough. Unfinished bonuses usually expire with any winnings attached.
  7. Win or cash-out caps. Some offers limit how much can be withdrawn from bonus play, whatever the balance shows.
  8. Order of funds. Whether your own money is used before bonus money, and what happens to a deposit if you withdraw early.
  9. Forfeit rules. Requesting a withdrawal before playthrough is done normally cancels the bonus and anything won with it.
  10. Discretion clauses. Wording about "irregular play" or "bonus abuse" that lets the operator void winnings. Check it is defined, not left open.

Why the maths still matters

Playthrough multiplies how much you bet, and every bet carries the game's built-in edge. The more you are required to wager, the more of that edge you meet along the way. The guide to RTP, volatility and progressives explains why a game's return figure only describes the very long run, and why high-volatility titles can make playthrough feel like a rollercoaster.

Red flags that justify saying no

  • terms that can be changed for a bonus you have already accepted
  • phrases like "at our sole discretion" with no definition attached
  • no version date or change history on the terms page
  • caps on winnings from your own deposited money, not just the bonus
  • offer terms that are hard to find from the promotion page itself

Keep your own copy

Take a screenshot or save the page when you opt in, with the date visible. If a disagreement arises later, the version you accepted is the one that should apply, and having it makes a complaint to the casino far easier to support. Bonus conditions are also behind many stalled cash-outs — the guide to why withdrawals stall lists the others.

Turning a bonus down is allowed

Most sites let you play without any promotion at all, and some let you remove a bonus you no longer want. For players who value quick, simple withdrawals, declining is often the cleaner choice. A bonus should never be the reason to deposit more than you planned; the amount you set in your deposit and time limits stays the ceiling either way.

18+. Promotions are marketing tools rather than free money, and the offers you are allowed to receive depend on where you live — check the local rules first.
